Walk of Shame

Nearly a decade ago, in early April, KLIN’s Jack Mitchell was boldly proclaiming to his radio co-host Dave Miller that winter was over. Dave told Jack to put his money where his mouth was. For whatever reason, Jack upped the ante by saying that if any day until the end of summer had a high temperature of 60 degrees or less, he’d ‘walk across the city’. As it turned out, a couple weeks later, a cool late April day failed to get to 60 and Jack had to pay up, walking from Lincoln North Star to Lincoln Southwest.

Since then Jack has made four different walks across the city, and one on his treadmill virtually, in years where his ’60-Degree Guarantee’ has failed. And once again, this year, he’s made a promise about the weather that he didn’t keep. So, as his penance he’ll be walking across the city from 7a-6p  on Friday, June 18th, and you’ll see him walking around town in that same goofy hat from Gateway to Holmes Lake to South Pointe, to Sunken Gardens, to the Capitol, to Memorial Stadium and wrapping up at Tavern on the Square in the Haymarket.

And as has been the tradition with the walk of shame, this year’s walk will benefit a local cause. Many in our community have been touched by the impact of mental health issues, particularly coming out of the pandemic. KLIN Radio and Brodcast House are no exception, as we have suffered significant losses related to mental health. To that end, this year’s Walk of Shame will be a walk to make clear that mental health treatment is anything but shameful, and that there are resources here within the community that are more than equipped to deal with issues that you may think  are insurmountable or unique. Specifically, Centerpointe is a local nonprofit that offers treatment to those suffering from anxiety, depression and other mental health issues, and with donor dollars they are able to provide a full range of service to clients regardless of their ability to pay. Community support is essential to making these important services available in and around Lincoln, and so Jack has decided to use this year’s walk to raise money and awareness for Centerpointe and the services they offer to the community.
