Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies were called to 62nd and Holdrege around 7 p.m. Wednesday night to investigate a suspicious item. Deputies found a suitcase in a ditch and noticed there was movement inside. They found 7 kittens, 2 older, friendly kittens and 5 that did not have their eyes open. All were taken to a veterinarian to be checked and Capitol Humane Society was notified. All appeared to be in good health.
Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says the mother was near the suitcase but ran off when deputies arrived. The Humane Society is now trying to safely trap the mother and reunite her with her kittens.
Deputies are checking with neighbors to collect video evidence and are talking to witnesses to find those responsible for abandoning the animals. Those responsible face animal cruelty charges.
