Election Commissioner Reminds Potential Candidates of Filing Deadlines for Lincoln City Elections

By News Feb 26, 2021 | 11:13 AM

Lancaster County Election Commissioner David Shively reminded potential candidates that filing deadlines for the April 6th Lincoln City Primary Election are quickly approaching.  Shively also reminded potential candidates that filing deadlines are different for candidates for the Lincoln Board of Education than they are for Lincoln City Council and Lincoln Airport Authority.

Non-incumbent candidates for the Lincoln Board of Education, Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7 must file by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 1st.    The incumbent deadline has passed.  An incumbent is an officeholder of any elected office who would like to file for the same office or for a different office.

Candidates for Lincoln City Council and for Lincoln Airport Authority have until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 5th to file.  There is no incumbent filing deadline for City Council and Airport Authority candidates.

Shively also reminded candidates filing for City Council and Airport Authority that they must pay the appropriate filing fee to the Lincoln City Treasurer.  Candidates for City Council and Airport Authority are required to have petitions signed by at least 150 registered voters.

Shively encourages those filing for City Council and Airport Authority not to wait until the last minute as petition signatures must be verified once they have been filed with his office.  All candidates file with the Lancaster County Election Commissioner.  Petition forms and other candidate information are available at the Election Commissioner’s office which is located at 601 North 46th Street, Lincoln and is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.   The office will be open until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 1st and Friday, March 5th.

For more information on filing procedures and qualifications, please call the Lancaster County Election Office at (402) 441-7311 or visit the Election Commissioner’s web site at: www.lancaster.ne.gov/election.
