Allen's 41 points not enough as Huskers fall at home

A big night ended with a sour feeling for Nebraska (5-16, 1-13 Big Ten) Tuesday.

The number for the game was 41.

That’s how many points Teddy Allen scored. It ties Aleks Maric’s Nebraska school record for points in a home game, set against Kansas State on February 13, 2007. The single-game scoring record is 42, set by Eric Piatkowski against Oklahoma in the 1994 Big Eight Tournament.

Allen did break the school record for points in a half with 28 over the first 20 minutes.

But 41 was also the number of points Penn State (8-12, 5-11 Big Ten) got from Husker mistakes.

“It don’t mean nothing,” Allen said of his scoring output. “We came up short. We just made too many mistakes, myself included. I had way too many turnovers.”

Nebraska turned the ball over 18 times, tying the high for Nebraska in Big Ten play. That turned into 25 Nittany Lion points. Penn State grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, tying Minnesota for the most against Nebraska in the conference. Those turned into 16 second chance points for the visitors.

So a near school record wiped out by often “careless” mistakes, as coach Fred Hoiberg called them. That, plus a 3:17 stretch without a made basket, meant playing from behind in the final minutes. Trey McGownes had a good look at a 3 in the closing seconds, but the shot missed the mark as Penn State took the win 86-83.

The victory for Penn State is the first on the road for them in the Big Ten this season.

Allen didn’t just shoot well, making 16 shots on 24 attempts and adding six 3s, but he also led the team with eight rebounds and six assists.

“I really thought Teddy played, when you score 41 and have six assists, that’s a really hard in a college game,” Hoiberg said. “He was really complete out there tonight. It was fun to see him get it going like that.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the win with the historic night that he had.”

McGowens was the only other Husker in double figures with 17 points.

Nebraska shot 53.6 percent as a team, including 12-of-25 on 3s.

Penn State shot just 40 percent from the field, including 14-of-37 on 3s, but the Nittany Lions got 14 more shots over the course of the game thanks to their offensive rebounding and winning the turnover battle.

Nebraska heads to No. 5 Illinois Thursday. The two teams went to overtime in Lincoln earlier this month.
