Will Shields to serve on CFP Selection Committee

By News Jan 27, 2021 | 5:50 AM

A former Husker will have a say in who plays for the next few football national championships.

Will Shields was named to the College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee on Tuesday. He will serve a three-year term, beginning this spring.

Shields is the second Husker to serve on the CFP Selection Committee. Hall of Fame coach and former Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne served during the first two years of the College Football Playoff—2014 and 2015.

The first scholarship player at Nebraska from the state of Oklahoma, Shields enjoyed success both collegiately and professionally in football.

While at Nebraska, Shields was named a first-team All-American in 1992 and won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior lineman. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Professionally, Shields played for 14 years, all in Kansas City after being drafted in the third round. He started 223 career games, making the Pro Bowl every season from 1995 to 2006. A member of the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 2000s, Shields was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

Shields is one of three Huskers who are enshrined in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
