Lincoln Police Officer Critically Injured In Shooting

Update:   Lincoln Police provided more details in Wednesday afternoon’s officer involved shooting that left an officer in critical condition.

Chief Jeff Bliemeister says the officer was rushed to a hospital and into emergency surgery.  He had been shot in the chest.

Lincoln Police released the names of the suspects; the first is 17-year-old Felipe Vazquez.  He was wanted in connection to the murder of Edward Varejcka last March.  A warrant had been issued for Vazquez’s arrest last Friday.  He was arrested near a house at 35th and P.

The second suspect is identified as 19-year-old Orion Ross.  He was arrested on the playground of Hartley Elementary School a short time after the shooting.  Neither of the suspects were injured.

The investigation continues.

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird released this statement:

“Today’s shooting of a Lincoln Police Officer is a reminder that our law enforcement professionals put their lives on the line every day to keep our city safe.  On behalf of the entire community, we extend our best wishes to the officer for a quick and full recovery from his injuries.  Our thoughts are with him and his family, friends, and co-workers at this difficult time.”

 

 

A Lincoln Police officer was rushed to a hospital after being shot while serving a warrant near 33rd and Vine Street just before Noon Wednesday afternoon.  The officer was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.  KLIN News is waiting for confirmation.

As of 1 p.m., Hartley Elementary School remained in lock down and officers are asking the public to avoid the area during this investigation.

Police report that officers are looking for a man wearing a gray hoodie and black pants who was on the run from police. Reports also state that the man is armed .

There are also scanner reports that one suspect was injured near 34th and Vine. The extent of injuries are not known.

33rd to 34th and P Street is locked down with several other streets in the area. There is a also a large police presence near 33rd and O.

Police believe the man may have entered a house at 35th and P Street.

KLIN is at the scene and will have updates as they become available as this is a rapidly changing situation.
