Fake Money Showing Up At Lincoln Businesses

Lincoln Police are looking into five cases where people tried to pass counterfeit bills.  They were at businesses ranging from convenience stores, gas stations and restaurants between July 31st and August 3rd.  Most of the counterfeit currency were $20 bills.
The number of counterfeit bill use is up with police receiving 160 cases so far this year, up 16% from a year ago.  Over the last five years, Lincoln Police has investigate approximately 270 counterfeit cases a year with a total loss to businesses at $24,000.
Police are working with businesses to identify the suspects through video surveillance.  They are also encouraging employees to check higher denominations of currency for security features in paper money.  In the latest cases, employees reported that the money did “not feel right”.  Some of the bills were marked as “Motion Picture Money”.
