Enhanced Risk Of Severe Storms Tonight

By News Jul 8, 2020 | 3:32 PM

The National Weather Service issued a situation report of an enhanced risk of severe storms tonight.

The greatest severe threat is from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on July 9th.  The highest confidence in severe weather is west of a line from Norfolk to Lincoln to Beatrice.

Scott Dergan is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service and tells KLIN News storms are expected around the Lincoln area at midnight.  These storms could pack damaging wind of up to 75 mph.  Upwards of two inches of rain is possible in a short period of time. There is also a risk of hail ranging from pea to ping-pong ball sized.

Storms will move into northeast Nebraska west of Norfolk between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.  Storms will most likely move into Lincoln and Beatrice between 9 p.m. and 12 a.m.  From 12 a.m. to 3 a.m., storms will spread across all of east-central and southeast Nebraska.

Impacts of the storm could range from limbs and large branches falling causing damage.  Power outages could occur due to the strong wind or falling limbs.  Damage is possible to homes and vehicles from large hail.  There is also the threat of ponding water on roadways.

The National Weather Service reminds residents to stay away from trees and power lines as storms approach.  Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings, especially overnight.
