Lincoln Brewery Prepping Special Beer As Part of Industry-Wide Equality Initiative

By News Jun 22, 2020 | 4:30 PM

A Lincoln brewery is preparing a special stout as part of a national initiative within the craft-brewing industry.

Managing Partner at Boiler Brewing Company Thad Aerts tells KLIN News the Black is Beautiful initiative started in San Antonio Texas by Weathered Souls Brewing Company.

“In light of recent events in the United States, they  (Weathered Souls Brewing Co.) decided to release an open-source recipe for a Russian imperial stout,” said Aerts.

The name of the stout? Black is Beautiful.

The recipe is free for anyone to use and brewers are encouraged to mix up the original recipe any way they want, however, those who do use the recipe are asked to donate proceeds sold from the beer to local organizations that support equality and inclusion.

Aerts says Boiler Brewing will donate proceeds to the Malone Community Center at 2032 U St.

“We figured us, as a brewery, to help a cause locally…we thought this is what we could do,” said Aerts.

He added he’s not worried about the potential politicization of being identified with the movement.

“I know that in this day and age everything can have a political spin on it, but that’s not our intent and that’s not our motivation,” said Aerts. “We don’t feel like doing the right thing is making a political statement.”

The Boiler Company’s Black is Beautiful brew isn’t ready for consumption just yet, according to Aerts, but will be in a matter of weeks.

He said his companies version of the stout will be unaltered from the original recipe.

According to the Brewers Association website, the Boiler Brewing Company joins over 700 breweries from 50 states and 13 countries also taking part in the initiative.
