Lincoln's Need For Delivery Drivers Is Urgent Amidst Long Wait For Necessities

By News Apr 6, 2020 | 10:04 AM

With limitations on our daily lives, something as difficult as finding food or groceries seems time-consuming and difficult.

While many businesses have cut back or closed one category is seeing business picking up.

“The volume that we have now is something I’ve never seen before,” MIke Sciandra, a full-time Door Dash delivery driver, tells KLIN News.

There aren’t enough drivers to meet Lincoln’s needs.

“A lot of these restaurants and grocery stores are not equipped or prepared for this.  Obviously it’s brand new.”

Sciandra employed himself through a free-lance event advertising company but had to shut it down for the time being because all of the events were canceled.

He moved from a part-time driver to a full-time position.

“This was my only way to make income and I feel like it’s been my calling right now out here doing this just because it is a needed service and if there is anything I can do to help people social distance and stay healthy I’m happy to do it,” he says.

One downfall is stores and restaurants are so slammed everyone ends up waiting.

“It’s definitely frustrating.  It’s frustrating for me as a delivery driver because when I go to a restaurant or when I go to a store I want that order as soon as possible because I only get paid by the delivery.  It’s frustrating for all of us.  It’s frustrating for the customers too.”

He says there’s a huge demand for more drivers.

He added he takes extra health precautions for his customers and himself when he’s behind the wheel, including maintaining social distancing, checking his temperature daily and wearing gloves. Another option includes no-contact deliveries.
