Dried Out Hands From Washing Often? Health Officials Offer Tips

By News Apr 6, 2020 | 10:47 AM

Since we’ve vigorously been washing our hands for the last two months, they more than likely have dried out.

Dr. Jennifer Abrahams, assistant professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Dermatology and dermatologist at Nebraska Medicine, says the key is to add an ointment right after you finish cleaning them.

“Your skins absorbs it better so the moisture stays locked in,” she says. “As far as lotion, actually we prefer something thicker like ointment and creams.”

She says petroleum jelly or vaseline better penetrate your skin than anything that comes from a bottle.

Some of us may have the painful, bleeding cracks on our fingers.

Dr. Abrahams says the cure for cracks is unique.

“A little trick we use in the dermatology world is filling in that space with a liquid bandage or even a little crazy glue.”

Washing your hands is just as important as taking care of dry hands.
