For a team that was constantly reminded of 1999, Saturday’s game in Indianapolis for the Big Ten championship resembled the last conference champion for Nebraska some 13 years ago. Unfortunately for the Cornhuskers, it was Wisconsin that looked like the Nebraska of the 20th century and not this year’s edition looking to punch their ticket to the Rose Bowl.
Superman’s cape could only be tugged on for so long. Fortunately for Nebraska, Rex Burkhead’s return against Iowa after missing most of the conference season came at a time when they needed the man of steel and not Clark Kent on the sidelines.
The senior Burkhead entered the game in the second half, carried 16 times for 69 yards and the decisive touchdown in the third quarter as the Huskers defeated the Hawkeyes 13-7 to clinch the Legends division championship and a spot in Indianapolis to play Wisconsin for the Big Ten championship next weekend.
Huskers Dominate Minnesota 38-14 in Senior Day Rout
No comebacks necessary this week, as the Huskers sent athletic director and former coach Tom Osborne off an easy 38-14 winner against Minnesota in Osborne’s 500th game as a coach or administrator at Nebraska. From the opening kickoff, it was apparent Nebraska wouldn’t be needing much in the way of heroics.
Huskers Rise Again After Halftime, Down Penn State 32-23
This might not have been adequate ‘revenge’ for 1982, but the 2012 Huskers will certainly take it.
Trailing 20-6 at halftime and facing their fourth-double digit second half deficit of the season, Nebraska was able to overcome that double-digit deficit and storm back to knock off a game Penn State team 32-23 as the Huskers moved to 8-2 on the season and remained atop the Legends Division at 5-1.
High blood pressure runs rampant in the Whitney family. After Nebraska’s comeback win over Michigan State, it’s safe to say many other Nebraska families may have the same affliction, if they didn’t already. Facing a top 10 defense on the road with 80 yards to go, the Huskers kept their cool and ground out their best drive of the game when they absolutely needed it most.
A suffocating defensive effort from Nebraska and just enough offense from Taylor Martinez and company helped the Huskers knock off 20th ranked Michigan 23-9 Saturday night in a game which saw the Wolverines’ talented quarterback Denard Robinson leave with a second quarter injury and never return.
Turnovers, Wildcats Not Enough to Stop Huskers in 29-28 Win
Nebraska was beginning to run out of feet after three fumbles, numerous penalties, and two big plays from Northwestern’s offense nearly sent the Huskers home with their second straight loss. However, Taylor Martinez, Quincy Enunwa, and the rest of the Huskers overcame a 12-point deficit in the final eight minutes to leave Evanston with a dramatic 29-28 win.
After Sluggish First Quarter, Buckeyes Roll to 63-38 Win Over Huskers
Carrying a 14-7 lead into the second quarter with the ball on Ohio State’s 21, Nebraska was in prime position to put serious pressure on the Buckeyes in front of a record crowd. The Huskers settled for a field goal on the drive, Braxton Miller ran 70 yards to set up a touchdown, and the game turned around in a big way for Ohio State as they blitzed Nebraska 63-38 in front of 106,102 at Ohio Stadium.
Badgers Strike First, Huskers Get Last Laugh in 30-27 Comeback Victory
There must be something about the first home night game of each Big Ten season for Nebraska that brings out history. With memories of the school-record 21-point comeback a year ago against Ohio State, the Huskers erased a 17-point second half deficit to defeat Wisconsin 30-27 Saturday night before the fifth-largest crowd in Memorial Stadium history.
Before the game, you no doubt heard numerous score predictions for Nebraska’s game against FCS level Idaho State. I figured it would be a quick affair, ending in roughly 2 ½ hours with the Huskers walking out a 49-7 winner. It wasn’t easy being that wrong, but the Huskers capitalized on Bengal mistakes and broke quite a few long plays to push the game time to three hours and 16

The week after losing to UCLA and a much maligned defensive performance proved to be a tough one for the Big Red and the rest of Husker Nation. Fortunately, a wounded defense stepped up and the offense rolled along for the Huskers in a 42-13 win over Arkansas State, despite head coach Bo Pelini being taken to a local hospital at halftime.
In their season opening 49-20 win over Southern Mississippi, it was Nebraska that made the correct second half adjustments. In their second game against UCLA, it was the Bruins who made the halftime adjustments on both sides of the ball to walk out of the Rose Bowl with a 36-30 win.
