Driving around Lincoln has been frustrating in the last few months, as a massive street repair project takes place. It’s been gratifying to note that there has been very little public complaining, as citizens are aware that the work is long overdue, and that things will soon get better as the jobs get completed.
Well, the results are beginning to show up, and what a pleasure it is to drive on the newly resurfaced streets around town, and contemplate what it will be like when all of the projects are done.
Our empathy has been extended to the merchants on the adjacent sides of O Street, from 17th to 21st, as they have had all access to their front doors completely cut off for weeks, and will have for some time yet. Most of them have accepted the facts, and have done as much as they can to direct their customers to access through back doors.
No one has yet figured out how to compensate for those losses of trade when a business loses access because of street construction. The best solution is for all of us to share the problem by continuing to do business with those firms who have been affected.
We should also be thankful for favorable weather and some fast work by the Public Works Department and their contractors who seem to be doing a great job.
A few more months and we’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
