With so much secretive acts by various government entities taking place throughout our country, it is pleasing to see the decision by City Attorney Rod Confer to call for a public hearing regarding the actions of the Public Building Commission.
A few days ago, the Commission decided to purchase a building on South 9th St., adjacent to the County City Building. This action was taken with a very minimum or public notice. There was no immediate need for the building by either the City or the County. Indeed, the lease to the current occupant, an engineering company, was extended. Evidently the commission was in effect, reserving this building for future expansion. Yet, there is public space being vacated in the County City Building when the County Jail moves to its new location on West O St.
It seems to many of us, that government, especially the County, has a constant desire to own more real estate. For instance, their insistence on holding the old Power Plant Building on the corner of 9th and J St when a developer desired to purchase it for private housing a few years ago. But the commission held on to the building which continues to hold old government records. This is far from the highest and best use of that property.
So it was a good move by Confer to order a public hearing before this latest real estate holding could take place.
It seems to be a very doubtful decision to purchase this property and we hope the decision is reversed.
