Here we go again. Our so-called representatives, elected by us to Congress, are once again playing their version of the game of “chicken”, where each side dares to stick to their position longer than the opponents can. The only problem is that they are playing with our future in a crucial game that threatens to ruin our beloved country, if only to satisfy the leaders and their lock-step followers.
The worst case of lock-step politics is the case where an unelected leader named Grover Norquist holds more power in his hands than any of the officials who have the responsibility to run America. Grover Norquist has persuaded, or threatened, or somehow persuaded hundreds of these puppy-like politicians to sign a pledge that they will vote a certain way. Failure to live up to that pledge is almost certain to mean losing the next election as Norquist and his moneyed team will focus all of their considerable influence and money to insure it.
How long are we voters going to allow this abdication of the voting power by the ones we have trusted, and are paying, to represent our interests, instead of the interests of one man who most of us have never heard of? Surely these signers must feel ashamed that they paid for their reelection with the very power of their vote, behind our backs, of course.
It is time that the names of every signer of the pledge are given strong attention in the media, the supposed watchdogs of government processes. We should demand it.
I’m Roger Larson, and that’s the way I see it.
