Analysis of Roundabouts from Listener Scott

Ok, I don’t know if you are talking about these new roundabouts and I won’t get to hear if you have any reaction to my comments but I’m guessing you are and I have to give my observations to someone!

So I went up and watched the stadium drive roundabout from the pedestrian bridge for a ½ hour tonight.  Lincoln drivers have a lot to learn!  It’s bad.  Hilarious but scary.  I would say over 75% of cars either straddled 2 lanes at one point or crossed lanes without knowing or needing to.  No kidding.  It looks like people enter the roundabout and spot where they want to exit and just head that way, not looking at lanes at all.  Not even beginning in the correct lane, just sitting in both lanes pretty much and crossing into whichever one they want.  And if there are no other cars around they just figure why stay in this lane when I can drive down the middle of the lane just as easy.  It just shows nobody is looking at the lanes and just thinks its one big lane.  Well technically that is reckless driving and most every driver on the roundabout would get a ticket for it.  Where else in town do you see people straddling the center lane or sitting in a turn lane half in one lane and half in the other?  You don’t.  I sincerely hope this activity doesn’t continue when these things are loaded with cars during game days!!

Some more observations:
-Drivers coming off 10th street come flying down that road and the shape of the road makes it look like they can just continue to go straight and continue on to salt creek roadway without having to make any kind of circle on the roundabout.  But the bridge to the left of them sort of blocks the roundabout and cars driving on it coming from their left.  So it looked like people didn’t even think it was a roundabout but it was just a through lane on to salt creek road and didn’t yield at all and flew right through the roundabout.
-Also most cars never yielded.  Maybe it was because there were no cars coming, but I seen one girl not even look to her left and just flew right into the roundabout.  Then on the other hand there are people that stop before entering and there are no other cars even at the intersection.
-I saw one car that entered the inside lane so then they were unable to exit the roundabout at their turn and had to drive around it again.  How often will this sort of thing happen?
-Ohhhh and the blinkers.  One car came up to the intersection with their left blinker on, I thought are they really going to turn left here?.  No they went around, still with their blinker on, and then as they approached the next roundabout they turned on their right blinker to enter that one; both incorrect uses.  Other than that I saw NO blinkers used in 30 minutes of watching.  NONE!

A listener on Drive Time mentioned something I thought about awhile back.  Can you just drive around and around or is that illegal?  Is it considered cruising after awhile?  What if 6 cars decided to just go around and around not letting anyone on, is that illegal?
Another mentioned that there weren’t enough signs.  Are you kidding me?  Go look and it looks like a forest of signs already.  There are yield signs all over the place not to mention arrows on the pavement.  There are arrows when approaching that show if you are in a certain lane you can turn left or right!  Ummm, shouldn’t it motion you to go straight into the roundabout or right to turn right?  You can’t turn left at the entrance!!

Have I confused you enough yet?  Good.  After 30 minutes I had seen all I needed to.

I recommend you go watch from this birds-eye view.  From the street you can’t see all the people crossing center lines riding in both lanes before, in, and after the roundabout.

Oh and while I was there football practice was letting out.  One player had 2 or more tickets on his intrepid.  He left them in his wipers, drove up over the curb, and drove down the sidewalk to get to stadium drive.  Ah, Coach can take care of those tickets right?  Another player made laps around the roundabout squealing his tires.  Gotta love them kids!

Your eyes and ears on reality,
Scott

Roundabouts
Hi Coby, Roundabouts - UNL has a GREAT site about roundabouts ... I know...I work there ntc.unl.edu We also have the facility members that recommended the changes in the DMV manual. We are also doing further research with roundabout message signs and before and after studies of roundabouts. I listen to you every night on my way home, and last night was about roundabouts... Even Jack and John... this morning, were talking about it... So I'm forwarding our web site address so you and other can see some of the things we are doing. We are in the newly remodeled Whittier (high school) Building and we do all kinds of traffic related research for the University, City of Lincoln and Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) If you visit our web site and look around, you will see some of the research we are doing currently. Hwy 2 and 84th... Wind and Solar energy to power intersections, we have railway studies going on and of course roundabouts studies... Well Hope you enjoy our web site and pass it on... Thank you... I enjoy your show every time I listen... Very entertaining... Keep up the good work... Hey!
A show live from the roundabouts eh? It should make for some good entertainment. Donuts and roundabouts go hand in hand. Although there wont be any accidents, hopefully you see what I seen and how the potential for accidents is there. It would be awesome to see a semi-truck go through! I also plan on watching once or twice a week to see if theres increased traffic flow and any improvement in driving so Ill notify you guys if anything major happens :)Scott

But a major Highway!?!
A roundabout at 14th & highway 2 - I just don't understand how you put a roundabout on a highway especially when it is the only road you can move through Lincoln on. I think it's going to be a disaster. For us commuters from South 14th area it is a nightmare.

Snow and multi-lane roundabout
Just wait until it snows and obscures the lane markers. Will people know it is two lanes? Cars already straddle the middle. The roundabouts by the stadium have only one lane feeding into it and not two. Imagine the confusion! Also, I take these roundabouts on occasion and I have almost had a semi sideswipe me, and other cars not yield to me when I was in the circle. This is not a busy circle, and yet I have to stop and wait often for traffic. This is UNL's European delusions of grandeur. If the roundabouts are so great, Southpointe would have had them first.

ROUNDABOUTS AND OBAMACARE
This has UNL smell all over it. Leave it to the liberals to fix something that's NOT broke. It's all about the money. Who is going to rake in the 11 million hard earned tax dollars? Is the artsie fartsie compound next door ordering this? Ya...this isn't europe. We don't want obamacare and heavens forbid we don't want this dangerous roundabout in our neighborhood. I can just see it, after many injuries and afew deaths from all the car accidents, the city of lincoln will be calling Helen Boosalis to RIP THIS MULTI- MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT OUT TOO! (remember downtown lincoln). I can just hear the voices behind the closed doors on this project! SUCKERS! Horrible! Just horrible! If Lincoln has to dump this kind of cold cash, FOR HEAVEN SAKES, fix our broken streets, sidewalks and trim the jungle of trees they have planted. more wasted money on unwanted projects that burden the common folk. If the cornhuskers keep losing football games....the roundabout might have to be auctioned off to pay the UNL bills! Building fantasies around the UNL babylonian temple. Stealing what they want. From colosseum to colosseum. Spare no expense. H*ll just put an extra tax on the cr*ppy resturant food they eat. who will know the difference? The hordes of screaming and cheering worshipers from the fall religious services of Husker Nation, alter of pig skins, will drown out the cries of north Lincoln.

Funny stuff for my Friday
That previous comment has me shaking my head in so many ways. I'd love to meet that person because his/her mind must be something else! Boosalis to Obama. Wow. There's a lot of anger in that GOP'er...
