The war of words continues locally and nationally over President Trump’s announcement that he will pursue massive tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Senator Sasse says “Let’s be clear: The President is proposing a massive tax increase on American families. Sasse says protectionism is weak, not strong.”
Following the President’s tweeted support for a trade war…Sasse says “Trade wars are never won. Trade wars are lost by both sides. Kooky 18th century protectionism will jack up prices on American families–and will prompt retaliation from other countries. Make no mistake: If the President goes through with this, it will kill American jobs–that’s what every trade war ultimately does. So much losing.”
When asked about Sasse’s comments…White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded that she didn’t know that the president will or should ever apologize for protecting American workers…and certainly not to Senator Sasse.
Nebraska farmers are very anxious about President Trump’s announcement that he’ll impose import tariffs next week on steel and aluminum. Nebraska Farm Bureau spokesman Jordan Dux tells KLIN News that unfortunately agricultural products tend to be the first items that are attacked when it comes to retaliatory measures by other countries
Dux says that they’ve already seen some trading partners look elsewhere with the president’s previous comments about NAFTA.
