Flu Claims the Life of a Nebraska Child

A child-flu related death is reported in central Nebraska.
It marks the state’s first pediatric death from the flu this season. State health officials say Nebraska along with the rest of the nation is experiencing a severe flu season. State Epidemiologist Dr. Tom Safranek says they’re seeing flu activity earlier than usual this year with flu continuing to circulate at very high levels. So far there have been 22 flu-related deaths statewide.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that 30 children have died nationwide from flu this season.

The department recommends flu shots for people 6 months and older.

Antiviral drugs like Tamiflu, prescribed by a health care provider, should be used as early as possible in people who have flu-like illnesses.
